How to Make Croquetas – Spanish Croquettes
Croquetas, also known as Spanish Croquettes, are one of the most delicious household staples in Cuba, Latin America, and Spain. Not only are Spanish croquettes delicious and crispy, but they are also a perfect breakfast or snack. Here is the list of ingredients and instructions to make Spanish Croquettes. Read on!
Ingredients
- Four tablespoons of unsalted butter
- One tablespoon of onion – finely chopped
- One cup of whole milk
- One cup of all-purpose flour – divided
- ¼ teaspoon of nutmeg
- Salt and pepper to taste
- One pound of ground ham
- One tablespoon of cooking wine
- Two large eggs
- One cup of breadcrumbs – grounded
- Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
- Melt butter in a saucepan over medium-low heat
- Add onions and cook for 1-2 minutes
- Whisk in milk, nutmeg, salt, and 1/3 cup of flour
- Don’t forget to add the pepper
- Add the cooking wine and ham to the whisked ingredients
- Reduce the heat and simmer for 5-6 minutes
- Transfer the filling to a bowl and set aside or refrigerate
- Remove the filling from the fridge or freezer
- Create logs 3 inches long and one-inch wide
- Add breadcrumbs to prevent stickiness
- Place all logs in the refrigerator for 30 minutes
- Whisk eggs and set aside
- Use another bowl to mix the breadcrumbs and flour
- Remove the logs from the fridge and dip each one in egg
- Now coat the log in flour-crumb mixture
- Repeat the step until you have covered or coated all logs
- Heat vegetable oil in a large-sized pan or pot
- Cover the logs in the oil and heat for 3-4 minutes
- Remove the logs from the oil and place them on a paper-lined plate
- Serve with lime wedges and saltines
